Frankfurt is a pretty modern city. It is home to businesses, skyscrapers and Europe's third largest airport – all of which are state of the art. This may be why Frankfurt has a certain fondness for a wide array of museums. When you think of Frankfurt, banks and the stock exchange are probably the first things to come to mind. And that's not wrong. But it's not all the city has to offer, as it also boasts an unrivalled wealth of museums. The museum embankment is a wonder to behold.
The magnificent Städel Museum situated at the heart of Frankfurt's museum mile is one of Germany's preeminent art museums. It features masterpieces spanning nine centuries of European art, with the must-see underground extension housing a collection of works from 1945 onwards. The German Film Museum, Museum of Architecture and Schirn Kunsthalle art gallery are just three of the 60 or so other institutions, all of which focus on a different theme. One of Frankfurt’s most important landmarks, the medieval Römer building is a significant part of the Römerplatz (Römer Square) in the Altstadt (Old Town). Located opposite Old St. Nicholas Church, it’s served as Frankfurt’s city hall for more than 600 years, though it’s naturally undergone some modifications in that time.
Comprising several houses and six courtyards from different eras, the three-story complex currently spans some 107,639 square feet. While it once functioned as a trading hub and venue for Frankfurt’s famous book fairs, it’s now more typically used for weddings and official functions. The various rooms, which include a restored Kaisersaal (Emperor Hall), are not normally open to the public, but the building is worth a visit if only to snap a photo of the iconic three-peaked neo-Gothic facade. Zeil Street is the large avenue that runs through the city centre which joins the two squares of 'Hauptwache' and 'Konstablerwache'. This street and its surrounding buildings were built during the 19th century. Unfortunately, this place was reduced to ruins due to the Second World War and the famous bombings that destroyed the city. But it wasn't rebuilt in this case because now it's the main shopping street in the city.
Throughout this walk (as this is a pedestrian street), you'll find all kinds of shops and in the middle of this golden mile of shopping, you'll see the Zeilgalerie shopping centre, which is one of the main shopping areas in Frankfurt. You'll also find another big shopping centre in Hauptwache Square. This lively avenue has a busy atmosphere during the whole day, but it's during the weekends when this street is absolutely teeming full of people.
